  DECKS AND PERGOLAS

Decks and Pergolas extend your living areas to the outdoors. Decks can be situated to allow easy flow from indoor areas through to gardens and facilities like the barbecue or spa.

Decks increase your living areas and add value to your property.
They can also cut down on maintenance.

Not all decks need to be consented but a check with your Local Council for their requirements is always a good idea.
Pergolas

Here a pergola is used to provide shelter and wind protection over a spa.

Pergolas are often combined with decks and fences to give a sense of seclusion and cosiness.

  RETAINING WALLS

Many hillside landscapes feature retainer walls to create level areas or hold up banks.  Larger walls may require engineers drawings and council approval.

A very attractive segmented retainer holds a high bank away from the house. This wall material is low maintenance and very strong and durable. It has the advantage that if ever it needs to be moved then the blocks can be lifted and repositioned.

Different materials for different effects, this retainer has been constructed by recycling a concrete path.

  FENCES AND GATES

Fences and gates are used to mark the boundary of a garden area or property.  Timber paling and railing fences are most common but other styles using other materials are increasing in popularity.

Trellis Fences

Trellis fences are a great way to provide a partial visual separation between areas. This garden area is very sheltered so there is not the same need to provide a wind break. The open trellis achieves a sense of boundary and focus on the garden without limiting the view of a wider space. It also has the advantage of letting more light through. Trellis fencing comes in various styles with the oriental and diagonal pattern very popular and, if necessary, can be made to fit your specific requirements.

Valley Landscape have experience in negotiations to assist owners reach an amicable arrangement over their fencing.

A small wall, capped with matching bricks, is used to raise the garden bed and provide an appealing garden edge. The wall blends in with the paving and from some angles looks almost invisible. An easy maintenance solution that keeps garden dirt from falling onto the paved areas.

In this view you can see how the mowing strip, garden edging and paving neatly fit together to produce a neat and tidy effect.

This easy maintenance gravel path leads down a gentle slope. The coloured brick edging ties the path into paved areas at both the top and bottom. Gravel is easily looked after, and, if the correct pebble size is selected, is easy to walk on. Good preparation is important.
Old Brick Path

Recycling these old bricks is a good use of existing material and environmentally friendly.   This style is well suited to gardens in Villa type homes.

  PLANTING

The selection of appropriate plants will make your landscape complete. There are many different varieties that can be used to good effect. Plants need to be chosen carefully for their suitability for the position, sun, water, drainage, wind, soil types and so on. Correct soil preparation prior to planting is essential for plants to gain good growth, particularly in the early stages.

Paved Step

This paved step uses bull-nosed clay pavers to link two areas of exposed aggregate tread. The coloured pavers give an attractive contrast to the grey aggregate and ties into the other paved borders.
Open Timber Steps

Perhaps the most common are open timber steps. While they might look a little bare here, once the planting is finished they will merge more into the garden. This design of step tends to be used in more functional areas.

Closed Timber Steps

Another style using treated timbers blends into the timber retaining wall and leads onto a timber deck to create a unified look that links the outdoor areas.
Concrete Aggregate Steps

These steps constructed using Concrete Aggregate provide a low maintenance and weed free access.
